Our Mission

Quality is the heart of our business. We believe in the importance of music and our services reflect this belief. Musicians of all ages and abilities deserve the highest quality instrument rentals, sales, lessons, and repairs. We work individually with customers to meet their musical needs. We actively support music education and work with over 100 Milwaukee area school music programs.

Our History

Melk Music had its beginnings as "Melk Band Instrument Service." In 1956, Phil Melk Sr., together with his son Phil Jr., had started a business dedicated to providing all musicians with a quality repair service. Through the years, Melk Music developed a reputation of quality repair workmanship with the highest standards of woodwind and brass repair. Professional and student musicians alike appreciated the high quality of work done at a fair price. Eventually, Phillip Jr.'s wife, Ruthann entered the business to work with customer service as well as the repairing of flutes.

In the early 1970's Phil Jr.'s oldest son, Fred, entered the business. Fred, an accomplished clarinetist, specialized in woodwind repair while Phil Jr. was well known for his brass repairs. The business further expanded into school instrument rental and sales, offering the same expertise and quality service as their repair work. Melk Music has grown to include string repairs, instrument accessories, sheet music, private lessons and workshops, all dedicated to personalized service for its customers.

For 52 years, Melk Music resided at 8625 W. Adler Street, where its iconic red letters were visible to cars passing by on I-94. Eventually, freeway construction and the need for new facilities encouraged the business to move.

On June 1st, 2015, Melk Music opened the doors at its new location, 12805 W. Janesville Road, with an expanded retail store and repair shop as well as improved lesson studios.

Current owner Fred Melk is the third generation of the family business. His son Brian Melk works as a school representative as well as a string technician in the repair shop.
